Experimental Iron Production - 2002

« large pic »
Roasted and unroasted ore (for comparison) (red is roasted). For this experiment Darrell had gathered several kilos of bog ore from St Lunaire, Newfoundland (about 10 miles from the L'Anse aux Meadows site). To extend this material, about the same measure of forge scale was added. To ensure that there would be enough silica available to create the needed slag, some straight sand was added. The rough totals were: roasted ore - 2.6 kg / forge scale - 2.4 kg / sand - 1 kg.
