Who's Who?

Experimental Iron Production - 2002

« large pic »
The smelter itself. The image is shot from in front of the smelter. The opening for the bellows can be seen just below the tape measure. This smelter frame is constructed using the form suggested by the archaeology of L'Anse aux Meadows. It is a series of stone slabs stood on end supported and backed up by earth and sods. The interior is about 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 inches) and about 40 cm (16 inches) tall. Later experiments, and further research into other programs would show that a CIRCULAR shape is more likely.
