Iron Smelting Experiment - 2004

The last of the hardwood is removed, just prior to loading the smelter with charcoal. Darrell works from the top using a long handled scoop tool. The idea here is to make sure that the starting charcoal load has particles of uniform sizes. Maybe not one of our better ideas!
In later smelts we would burn the hardwood down a bit more then just add the initial charcoal load on top.
