Iron Smelting Experiment - October 2004

« large pic »
The completed fire brick smelter. The overall height is about 60 cm with an average diameter of about 30 cm. (In fact the shape is a slight tear drop - with the point at the tuyere.) Night has fallen! Starting a slow fire in the smelter to dry the clay and pre-heat the mass. Using scraps of cardboard helps remove the water without flashing it to steam to limit cracking.
