Iron Smelting Experiment - October 2004

« large pic »
The bloom extracted and laid on a large stone to attempt some hammer consolidation. A 1.5 kg hammer was used, but between the low temperature (a medium to dull red) and the bounce of the 'anvil' little effect was observed. One good thing was that the bloom mass did not shatter under the hammer, which would be expected if the carbon content was too high. A good block of workable iron??
