| Near the end of the smelting sequence. At this point all the charges have been added and we are starting to burn these down towards the 'hot spot' just at the tuyere. This image was taken just before an addition of a load of charcoal, which will fill up the top section. Note how the burning zone of the charcoal remains about 10 cm below the top of the smelter.
