Iron Experiment - Oct 2015

« large pic »
One for the archaeologists - a sample pack. The slag on the left is "unhappy" slag. A greenish could, a cluster of small blobs in shape. That is the type of slag that comes from "non-ore" sources (like the clay lining or dirt walls). In the middle is a drop of "happy slag". This black, glassy, very runny slag is iron rich and a natural product of a successful smelt. On the right is cast iron. Much heavier than any of the slags. A sure sign that the smelt is running too hot and in this case coming at about 3.5 hours into the smelt.
